Primary dysmenorrhoea starts with pain the first day the girl started bleeding.

3. The pains in the primary type of painful periods become become less severe as soon as the period is established by the second day of the menstruation where as it is not so in the secondary type where the pain lasts throughout the period and instead of getting less become worse.

4. In primary dysmenorrhea, there is no associated heavy periods lasting for about 6 - 8 days as against the case in the secondary dysmenorrhea where there is heavy flow. Heavy period is called Menorrhagia in medicine.
